These are the terms you agree to by buying or using WritersBox. I've tried to write them in English rather than in legal fog, because terms nobody can read are terms nobody agreed to.

1. Who you're dealing with

WritersBox is made and run by Logan Brander, a sole trader in Ontario, Canada. In these terms, "I" and "me" mean him, and "you" means you.

Payment is handled by Paddle, who act as the seller of record. Their own buyer terms apply to the transaction itself, alongside these.

2. Your writing is yours

You own everything you write in WritersBox, completely and forever. I claim no rights over your scripts, treatments, worlds, characters or notes. I don't licence them, use them, train anything on them, or look at them.

Your work is saved on your own computer. It isn't uploaded to me. If you stop paying, if your licence lapses, or if WritersBox stops existing, your files are still on your machine and still yours, and WritersBox can export them to standard formats at any time.

3. What you're buying

A licence to use WritersBox, not the software itself. That licence is personal to you, and lets you:

• install and use WritersBox on up to three of your own computers;
• use it for as much work as you like, commercial or otherwise, with no limit on projects, pages or output;
• keep everything you produce with it.

You may not resell it, rent it, share your licence with other people, or try to remove the parts that check whether it's licensed.

4. What "lifetime" means

This matters, so it's spelled out rather than assumed.

A lifetime licence means the lifetime of WritersBox, not your lifetime. It means: you pay once, you never pay again, and you receive updates for as long as I keep making them. It doesn't promise that WritersBox will be developed for ever, because nobody can honestly promise that.

If I ever stop working on WritersBox, the last version you've keeps working. It runs on your own computer and doesn't need me or my servers to open your files. I'll also do my best to give reasonable notice.

The founders tier is a lifetime licence on the same terms, limited to the first 150 people, at a reduced price.

5. Subscriptions

A monthly or yearly plan renews until you cancel. You can cancel at any time and keep access until the end of the period you've paid for.

If a subscription lapses, WritersBox becomes read-only rather than locked: you can still open, read, export and print everything you've written. You're never shut out of your own work.

6. Refunds

If WritersBox isn't right for you, email me within 14 days of buying and I'll refund you. You don't need to justify it. Refunds are issued through Paddle, and their process applies.

7. Back up your work

WritersBox keeps automatic backups on your own computer, and you can export at any time. You're responsible for keeping your own copies of work you can't afford to lose. That's true of every piece of software ever written, and it's worth saying out loud when the work is a screenplay.

8. What I don't promise

WritersBox is provided as it is. I work hard to make it correct and I test it heavily, but I can't promise it's free of faults, that it'll suit your particular way of working, or that it'll never be unavailable.

Nothing here takes away rights you've under consumer law in your country, which can't be signed away and aren't affected by anything below.

9. Limit of liability

Subject to section 8:

My total liability to you is limited to the amount you actually paid me in the twelve months before the problem arose.

I'm not liable for lost or corrupted work, lost profits, lost opportunities, missed deadlines, or any indirect or consequential loss, including a script not being finished or delivered on time.

This is the ordinary limit that all software carries. It's also why section 7 exists: keep your own copies.

10. Accounts

Keep your password to yourself and let me know if you think someone else has it. You're responsible for what happens on your account.

I may suspend an account that's being used to share a licence, break these terms, or attack the service. Where it's fair to do so I'll contact you first.

11. Changes

I may update these terms. If a change matters, I'll update the date above and email account holders. Changes aren't retroactive. A licence you've already bought keeps the terms it was bought under.

12. Ending it

You can stop using WritersBox whenever you like. If you seriously break these terms, I may end your licence. Even then, your work remains yours and remains on your computer.

13. Which law applies

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the laws of Canada that apply there, and the courts of Ontario have jurisdiction. If you're a consumer elsewhere, this doesn't remove the protections of your own country's law.

14. Getting hold of me
